Keeping Your Dog Cool This Australian Summer: 5 Practical Tips
Dogs cool down far less efficiently than we do โ they've got sweat glands only in their paw pads, and rely mostly on panting. In an Australian summer, that makes heat management a genuine safety issue, not just a comfort one.
1. Rethink walk timing, not just walk length
Pavement and asphalt can be 20โ30ยฐC hotter than the air temperature on a sunny day, hot enough to burn paw pads well before the air itself feels unbearable. Early morning or after sunset walks avoid this almost entirely โ if you can hold the back of your hand on the pavement for five seconds comfortably, it's safe for paws.
2. Give them a cooling surface indoors and out
Dogs will actively seek out a cool surface to lie on when they're warm, which is exactly what a cooling mat is designed to provide without needing power or refrigeration. Our Pet Cooling Pad Bed uses a pressure-activated cooling material that works both indoors and in shaded outdoor spots.
3. Make water play part of the routine
Not every dog loves a bath, but most enjoy supervised water play on a hot day. A backyard sprinkler pad like ours gives dogs a safe, shallow way to cool off and burn energy without the fuss of a full hose-down โ our Inflatable Dog Sprinkler Pad connects straight to a garden hose for exactly this.
4. Know the early signs of overheating
Heavy panting that doesn't settle, bright red gums, thick drooling, and reluctance to move are all early warning signs โ not just end-stage heatstroke symptoms. Flat-faced breeds (bulldogs, pugs) and older or overweight dogs overheat faster than the average dog and need extra caution.
5. Never underestimate the car
Even on a mild day, a parked car's internal temperature can climb well past dangerous levels within minutes. The simplest rule remains the safest one: if you can't take your dog with you, don't take them in the car at all for that stop.
Building a simple summer setup
Most dogs do well with just three things covered: a cool place to lie down, access to fresh water in more than one spot around the house or yard, and walks scheduled around the heat rather than the clock. Browse our full range of cooling and comfort gear to round out your dog's summer setup.
